Equipping Health Workers, Saving Lives
Behind every improved outcome for a patient is a trained health worker who knew what to do, when to do it, and how to do it well. Training is the backbone of sustainable sickle cell care.
The Muhimbili programme demonstrated this clearly: by equipping clinicians, nurses, and laboratory staff with knowledge and skills, it was possible to diagnose and manage sickle cell disease more effectively, even in resource-limited settings. Training also extended to research staff, ensuring that local teams could collect, analyze, and use data to inform practice.
We provide comprehensive training programmes tailored to the needs of different health workers. Doctors and nurses are trained in clinical management of crises and long-term care. Laboratory staff learn advanced diagnostic techniques such as hemoglobin electrophoresis and HPLC. Community health workers are equipped with the basics of patient education, pain recognition, and referral.
Our methods are diverse and practical, combining classroom teaching, online learning, mentorship, and hands-on clinical rotations. To sustain impact, we are working to integrate sickle cell modules into the curricula of medical and nursing schools, ensuring that future generations are prepared from the outset.
Every trained health worker is another step toward a stronger health system, fewer preventable deaths, and more families receiving the quality of care they deserve.
